The Bad News About Health Care

40% of all Americans have no health insurance today.

Many small and mid-size businesses reduce health insurance coverage each year.

Group health insurance remains less expensive than individual health insurance.

Some insurance agents offer you the "best" quotes available, even though your rate will be increased after you fill out the health survey.

Group health insurance costs increase an average of 2% per month even when there are no claims.

The Good News About Health Care

Most businesses with 10 or more employees can still offer full health insurance plans for less cost than many larger companies incur.

Health care expenses can be used to reduce both employee and employer tax obligations (some restrictions apply).

Some of the most financially stable insurance companies underwrite low-cost plans.

Major medical plans often provide less insurance for serious illness than low-cost supplemental plans.

Employers can offer cost-effective health plans to employees for little-to-no money.

Many employees would rather pay for their own insurance than have no insurance at all.

Xenite.Org Business Features
There are approximately 4,000,000 people living in the metropolitan Houston area today. Of those 4,000,000 people, 1.6 million have no health insurance. But those people are as prone to suffering from illness or injury as the other 2.4 million people who do have health insurance. Even with today's skyrocketing health care costs, it is possible for many employers to offer full, effective coverage to their employees ... sometimes at little to no expense to the company.

Many employers mistakenly believe that low-cost health insurance plans "nickel and dime their employees to death". These words have actually been used of supplemental health care products. Well, if your company provides full major medical benefits to your employees at no charge to the employees, you may be surprised to know that your benefits won't cover all costs entailed by: maternity, cancer and other catastrophic illnesses, long-term hospital stays due to off-job injuries, and funeral costs. Your employees must still bear the burdens out of their own pockets for these everyday expenses.

While most people will readily tell you that 1-in-4 women can expect to be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lifetimes, did you know that 1-in-3 men will also be diagnosed with cancer? And yet, women usually buy cancer protection (which major medical plans do not include) at rates up to 3 times more frequently than men. Furthermore, as each year passes, cancer protection policies become more expensive, reduce coverages, or both. Why? Because our population is aging, growing older. More people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Cancer protection is just one type of supplemental coverage that should be purchased well in advance of the actual need. Many, if not all, policies are left unaltered when insurance companies replace their products. So, if you buy cancer coverage today, the odds are very good it will be better than the cancer coverage your co-workers buy in five years.

More than one employer has said "My people would never buy this stuff. They don't want it." And yet, after holding group meetings with their employees where professional agents explained the costs and benefits of supplemental plans, on average between 40-60% of employees do buy supplemental insurance policies. Why? Often because their employers offer little or no major medical coverage.

Most people use their major medical insurance to reduce doctors' office visit fees and prescription drug fees. Insurance companies monitor these expenses closely and they continue to raise major medical premiums on the basis of usage. Some companies consider themselves fortunate if their major medical plans only increase about 2% in a year. And yet, those same companies could have reduced their major medical expenses by as much as 10-15% without sacrificing coverages. Is it really cost-effective to write off a 17% reduction in your major medical expenses?

The truth is that most insurance brokers who offer major medical plans don't look at the cost-effective, time-proven supplemental plans that help reduce expenses without sacrificing coverages. And why should they? Their revenues come from the commissions they earn from those major medical premiums. Finding a broker who works with both major medical and supplemental insurance plans is not easy. In the future, more health insurance brokers may cross-market these products, but today you need a supplemental broker who fills the gap in your health insurance coverage AND helps you save money at the same time.

You have nothing to lose. You and your employees can save money on existing expenses. And you may be able to add some benefits to your employment program that help retain valuable employees. Not every supplemental broker is a high-pressure, got-to-beat-down-your-door salesman. There are some good brokers out there who understand you need to make a good business decision. Let us help inform you so you can make the best business decision. Your employees will appreciate your taking the time to look out for their interests.

After all, if they incur serious health expenses and have little to no coverage, where will they turn for help when their friends and families cannot pay the bills?
