Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda was one of the most highly anticipated science fiction television shows of the late 20th century. When actor Kevin Sorbo announced he was leaving New Zealand and his long-running hit series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, fans around the world waited anxiously as he considered several projects which were offered to him. Sorbo chose to head the cast of Andromeda, a science fiction action/adventure hour developed by Robert Hewitt Wolfe from an idea created by the late Gene Roddenberry.

Andromeda focuses on the mission of Captain Dylan Hunt, last surviving officer of the Systems Commonwealth High Guard, to restore peace and security to the former member worlds of the Commonwealth. When the Nietzscheans, a powerful genetically engineered sub-species of the human race, rebel against the Systems Commonwealth, they draw Hunt's ship, the Andromeda Ascendant, into a trap. Captain Hunt orders his crew to abandon ship while he makes a risky and desperate maneuver to draw the Nietzscheans away from the escape pods. But Hunt doesn't count on the treachery of his own Nietzschean first officer, Gaheris Rhade, whose sabotage disrupts the Andromeda's systems enough that she cannot maneuver.

The ship is caught near the event horizon of a black hole in the Hephaestus system. More than 300 years later Beka Valentine and her crew use her salvage vessel, the Eureka Maru, to pull the Andromeda free of the black hole's grasp. When Dylan Hunt learns that the Commonwealth had fallen before the Nietzscheans' rampage, he resolves to build up a new Systems Commonwealth, and he enlists Beka Valentine and her crew, along with the Nietzschean mercernary Tyr Anasazi, to help him.

The show was produced for four seasons, starting out in syndication and eventually being picked up by SciFi. No longer in production, Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda is still fondly remembered by many Kevin Sorbo fans, and it helped spawn or enlarge fan bases for Lexa Doig, Lisa Ryder, Laura Bertram, Gordon Woolvett, Brent Stait, and Keith Hamilton Cobb.
