Dark Angel premiered on the Fox television network in the 2000-2001 season. Starring Jessica Alba as Max, a genetically engineered warrior, the show focuses on Max's efforts to avoid recapture by government agents as she looks for other members of X-5, the group of children who escaped from the Manticore Project. X-5's escape was aided by a terrorist attack which wiped out all computer information in the United States. The United States lost trillions of dollars' worth of wealth in an instant and was reduced to the status of a third world nation. Soon the government imposed a police state rule on the country to prevent chaos and anarchy, but the system has become corrupt.

Max is aided in her search by Logan Cale, an independently wealthy former journalist who hacks into cable broadcasts with his "Eyes Only" network. Logan crusades against injustice and corruption and he recognizes Max's special talents as soon as she breaks into his apartment. Logan tracks down Max and strikes a deal with her: she does favors for him and he helps her find her brothers and sisters from X-5. Along the way they cannot help but develop special feelings for one another.

Although it was widely hailed by SF fans as a cutting edge show, Dark Angel only lasted two seasons. One of the reasons for the show's failure may have been the rapid, bizarre twists that the sub-plots took. The original nemeses fell out of the picture and new villains (as well as new friends for Max) failed to capture the audience's imagination.
