If you have ever wondered how other people's web sites always seem to come up first in search engine and directory results, the answer is that they have probably optimized their Web pages and directory listings to give themselves better rankings. The search engines and, to a lesser extent, the directories can be subtly manipulated to list some sites first. There are accepted methods (approved by the search engines and directories) and less accepted methods (frowned upon by the search engines and directories) for getting high rankings.

The Web sites listed here were selected because of the quality of the information they provide, the high integrity of the Webmasters (in our opinion) which run them, and because they only advocate the accepted methods of optimization. Some sites may also be selected because of their pure informational value for Web design specialists. Once you get people to visit your site, it's important to keep them there. Web usability is an oft-overlooked feature.
