Edgar Rice Burroughs was one of the most prolific pulp writers of the 20th century. His influence on western popular culture was immense, and it continues even to this day. His best-known character, Tarzan, has been the subject of dozens of movies, several television shows, numerous books and comics, and tons of merchandise.
But though Tarzan is a fascinating character, I have always loved the John Carter stories more. Barsoom captured my imagination while I was still just learning about science fiction and fantasy. I had discovered the works of Andre Norton and J.R.R. Tolkien and I wanted more like what they had written. Their worlds were rich, detailed, and full of wondrous background histories and stories. ERB, though far more of a pulp fiction writer than a traditional novelist, built complex, active worlds through which he propelled his characters. His heroes never stayed in any land very long, but the reader learned volumes about the history and geography of Mars, Venus, the Moon's interior, and the interior of the Earth. In the 1990s, I began writing WorldFAQs to share my love of various science fiction and fantasy worlds with other readers. I posted them to a news group I created, alt.fan.created-worlds, in the hope that other people would share similar documents about their favorite authors' worlds. Alas! It was not to be. Too few people were interested enough to compile all the information about fictional worlds that a full WorldFAQ required. And, at the same time, the World Wide Web was beginning to take off. More and more people turned to creating Web sites as a means of expressing their love for fiction. Bruce Bozarth republished the ERB-related WorldFAQs on his site with my permission. But it has always been my intention to give them a home here on Xenite.Org. This site represents the first phase of that project. ERB fandom has produced some great resources like the ERBList site. Rather than try to compete with them as a fact-listing resource, Xenite.Org will move in new directions as we continue to update our content. We have thus revived an old ERB fan fiction site Xenite.Org once included, Barsoom: The Lost Chronicles. More content will be added as time permits. If, after you browse the WorldFAQs, you want to know more about ERB's fantastic worlds, be sure to visit the ERBAtlas site as well as the ERBList site. And let us know what you think of Edgar Rice Burroughs in SF-FANDOM's Pulp Authors Forum. Enjoy! Michael |
