So, if you were going to write an ERB pastiche, or just an homage to ERB,
how would you plot the story?
Without scanning my books (a pleasurable experience, but one for which I
have no time today), I should think the basic plot goes something like
this:
1) The Hero is introduced as some sort of misfit or outsider
2) The Hero ends up in some unusual place
3) The Hero meets The Girl, who rebuffs his interest
4) The Girl is [kidnapped/threatened/pursued] by The Villain
5) The Hero vows to defeat The Villain and free The Girl from
the peril he represents, no matter what the personal cost
6) The Villain [if he hasn't kidnapped The Girl yet] kidnaps
The Girl, or pursues her into the wilds
7) The Hero chases The Villain
8) The Hero and The Girl meet up again, and now she accepts
his protection [possibly with ironclad conditions, and she
may not recognize him]
9) The Hero and The Villain clash, The Villain gets away
with The Girl
10) The Hero follows The Villain and meets The One True Friend
11) The Hero and The One True Friend find The Villain's refuge
12) The Villain is forced by his followers to kill The Girl (but
he can't bring himself to do it)
13) The Hero finds The Rebels among The Villain's followers and
organizes them
14) The Hero confronts The Villain again, and The Villain escapes
again with The Girl
15) The Hero leaves behind The Rebels and The One True Friend to
pursue The Villain and finds a weird new landscape
16) The Hero catches up with The Villain and defeats him, saving
The Girl, who now professes her true love, just as The One
True Friend, The Girl's Family, The Rebels, and Anyone Else
Whom The Hero Or Girl Has Befriended shows up with overwhelming
force for a battle that never takes place (or takes place in
the background while The Hero dispatches The Villain)
