OFFICIAL FAQ / CHARTER for alt.tv.xena-subtext

" LEt'S gEt LAwLeSS ! "

Welcome.

The original description of this newsgroup, appearing on your server, has been revised. The amended description is:

Discussion of Xena:Warrior Princess from the default viewpoint of a belief in an evolving romantic/sexual relationship between Xena Warrior Princess and Gabrielle, her dedicated and endearing bard.

We accept this relationship as the default premise here because we choose to. It is not the only way to view Xena:Warrior Princess, it is the way *this* newsgroup views it.

The loving/sexual relationship between Xena and Gabrielle is what we (and the show) refer to as "subtext". We use this default premise as a springboard to further interpret the show "through a subtextual eye".

Subtext also includes any other romantic same-sex interactions; implied, imagined, inferred or otherwise.

We pretty much ignore, make fun of, or complain about anything that detracts from the subtext.

Because of the nature of the subject, the membership here is heavily lesbian, though we welcome anyone, male or female, of any persuasion. If you are intolerant of lesbianism however, or want to discuss our heroines in combination with male characters, this is not the group for you.

What's considered anti-charter here?
****************************
Posts which promote or celebrate Xena or Gabrielle in combination, romantically, with male characters. (Cuz that ain't subtext and this is a subtext ng.)

Challenging the very existence of the subtext (i.e. their relationship) is anti-charter. If you want to argue whether the subtext exists or not, (like if you're dying to post, "Xena is not a lesbian!") you can go to alt.tv.xena and do that all you want.

What about when the show *does* throw in male romantic interests?
****************************************************
We hand out ripe tomatoes, encourage foul language, and promote general rioting.

This should not be misconstrued as a bad attitude towards men or heterosexuality in general. This is a show, not real life, and we are enjoying our heroines the way we chose to. Male love interests muck up the story line and characters from our POV, and as such are fair game for abuse ... along with the writers and producers. If it hurts your feelings to see Ares emasculated, pick another ng.

Note: We don't claim to Politically Correct and you can't make us.

Tolerance for off-topic posts
**********************
It's okay to wander off topic when, in the course of a conversation one thing leads to another, ("off-topic" should not be misconstrued to mean anti-charter, but more like wandering on to a story about your new shoes, or how they haven't written good lines for Scully in the last four years of X-Files, or some such thing). We ask only that your XWP posts outweigh your off-topic posts.

The "feel" we're after in atx-s
**********************
We like to cop feels in atxs. If you get too close, beware.

Flame wars
*********
BBQ's are inevitable in a land of carnivores but if you're going to cook meat please let me know so I can stand upwind.

UNANTICIPATED INFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
=======================================

Q. How come they screwed up the show by making it so much less subtextual?
A. We don't know. We liked it fine (and so did the fans) when Xena and Gabrielle were pledging undying love, hugging, kissing, and doing everything but the math between 68 and 70. Since the producers backed off, so have the ratings. Still, we like X & G for what they once were.

Q. Why'd they bring a baby into this?
A. Lucy Lawless had one in real life with Robert Tapert, who are both now in baby-consciousness, having forgotten what the show was originally about.

Q. Can I cross-post?
A. No. Please DO NOT CROSSPOST between alt.tv.xena-subtext and any other newsgroup, *even if you want to post the same message*. Our charter is significantly unique so that cross-posting will cause off-topic leakage leading to flame wars and a general mucking up of the board.

Q. Will Xena and Gabrille ever consummate their relationship on TV?
A. Well, speaking from personal experience, I tried to consummate a relationship on a TV once and it was a very uncomfortable experience for her. (Sorry hon, I thought screaming was a _good_ thing.)

Q. Can I post fanfiction here?
A. No, but you can post it to alt.tv.xena.creative.subtext, a newsgroup for subtextual fanfiction. [Please read that ng's FAQ for any guidelines. If your server does not have this ng available yet, you can access it through Deja News or request it from your ISP's system administrator.] You may also post URL's to your fanfic here.

Q. Are there other subtext groups like this one for other shows?
A. Funny you should ask. As I write this a new one is being created. It will probably be alt.tv.subtext and will be a group for discussion of subtext in any TV, movie or book. In case the name changes, just search for the word "subtext" in your newsgroups and you should find it. It should come to pass in early March, 2000, and be widely available by late Spring. You can ask about it at alt.tv.xena-subtext.
