The Lord of the Rings movies
· Peter Jackson, with funding from New Line Cinema, produced three movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings". Filmed entirely in New Zealand, and starring actors such as Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Liv Tyler (Arwen), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), and Christopher Lee (Saruman), the movies approximately follow the three volumes of The Lord of the Rings with which most Tolkien fans are familiar: "The Fellowship of the Ring" (December 19, 2001), "The Two Towers" (December 18, 2002), and "The Return of the King" (December 17, 2003). Xenite.Org has been keeping fans informed about the progress of the movies since February 1998, longer than any other LoTR movie news site. We are also home to some of the best Tolkien and Middle-earth forums, fan fiction, and commentary on the Internet today. LOTR Movie news archives from April 1, 2000 through April 27, 2000 Somewhere around April 27 news · Has the prospect of all that movie-related merchandise got you down, Bunky? Well, did you know Tolkien Enterprises says on their Web site that "snce 1978, Tolkien Enterprises has carried out a worldwide licensing program, through which we have authorized dramatizations, musicals, puppet performances, services and merchandise using the Tolkien trademarks. Our licensees have produced a large range of merchandise, including board games, puzzles, computer games, chess sets, playing cards, tarot decks, T-shirts, costumes, masks, buttons, belt buckles, dolls, puppets, metal miniature figures, coloring books, music, linens, pewter figurines, porcelain figurines, collector plates, clocks, daggers & swords, action figures, bulletin boards, mirrors, posters, calendars, note-cards, stationery, collectible card games, role-playing games, decals and bumper stickers"? · Tarot decks, eh? Wonder what the devout Catholic Mr. Tolkien would have thought of such a thing. Can you imagine Saruman checking out the progress of events with his handy LOTR Tarot deck after Grima Wormtongue tosses the palantir out the window? Nonetheless, Peter Pracownik's artwork is exquisite. You can check it out at his official Lord of the Rings Tarot Web site. (And now how long will it be before all that artwork shows up in the banners and backrground images of the various Tolkien fan sites?) · Chimera Publishing, is offering for sale "the signed and numbered Alan Lee portfolio titled 'The Drawings of Alan Lee' published by CYGNUS in 1983. Not exactly Tolkien-related, but collectors will want to look at the inventory available. · So. Just exactly which scenes are they filming at Whakapapa ski-field on Mt Ruapehu? TheOneRing.Net says it's the "Last Alliance" sequence. But Imladris says it's the Misty Mountain scenes. If the "Last Alliance" sequence for the prologue is being filmed there, then it stands to reason that other scenes from late in the book (Sam and Frodo's approach to Orodruin, the final confrontations with Gollum, and maybe Gandalf's rescue) may be in the four-week schedule they had set up before snow came down and made a small mess of things. Hm... · Just a small note for those of you who haven't noticed yet. Tolkien-movies.com is changing servers and they are, apparently, waiting for their new IP address to propagate to name servers everywhere. We here at Xenite.Org know what that's like. Best wishes to the Webmasters. You can check out their temporary site and, if you're a Spanish-speaking/reading fan, they have links to some articles in Español. Or you could just check out Las neuvas peliculas en EL SEŅOR DE LOS ANILLOS. · Do you have a high-speed connection? (Cable modem or T1 recommended) Take a look at these Tolkien-related search results at a broadband (that is, multimedia) search engine named Scour. · Have you checked out the 7-volume plus CD Millennium Edition of The Lord of the Rings? Somewhere BEFORE April 27 news · Dominic Monaghan talked a little bit about his role as Merry. Thanks to TolkienOnline.Com for bringing this to everyone's attetion. · Listen to J.R.R. Tolkien read from "Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit" at MP3LIT.Com. · Listen to NET TALES-1: The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings Radio Dramas at live365.com, an Internet radio resource. Yes, the purists will rake them over the coals for this one. Bilbo leaves the Shire for Rivendell at 111 and he passes over Sea at 132. Ah well, it's the media. What can you you expect? At least they spelled Bilbao's name right (that's a joke, son, a joke! D'ya git it?) · New Line Cinema has finally answered the question which has bothered millions of fans: where did the trailer music come from? It was taken from "The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc". The soundtrack for the film was composed by Eric Sierra. · So, you think online fandom takes itself a little seriously about these movies? Maybe not. Mithrigil has been kind enough to let Xenite.Org host Peter's Rings, a musical satire of real life. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings". · Good grief, Tolkien fans! We've just learned how the late Charles Schultz could have had his own interpretation of The Lord of the Rings. · Foxtrot has joined LOTR-mania.... · Joram Manka at the new Ringbearer heard from one of the sadly misinformed Orc extras from Helm's Deep: I just wanted to clear up some of the fans worries about orcs. In the footage we just got to see, the ones with plate armour we see are Uruk Hai - not normal Orcs. People with a good knowledge of Middle Earth will know that Uruk Hai do in fact have plate armour - it was forged to their body upon ceation. You can also see the Uruk Hai in the scene just after we see Legolas - they have just breached the hole in the Deep`s wall.Sorry, folks, but this is absolute nonsense. The Uruk-hai wore CHAIN MAIL when they had armor at all. Peter, I've stood behind you on changes upon changes, despite my own sorrow at some of the necessary cuts, but this is ridiculous. If someone on the set is "explaining" things to the extras, fire that amateur NOW! I just took a week-long emotional roller-coaster ride of reaction after telling other Tolkien Purists to calm down and look for the good stuff in these movies and now I see this drivel. Sorry, Joram. You're a great guy, but this extra's report is just going to drive more Purists away from the films. · Fact or rumor? Gandalf posted some rumors on The White Council that some of his friends are portraying Elves in the Peter Jackson movie, and that the Elves will be given a "glow" effect to help distinguish them from Humans. This is good (although, technically, only Elves from Aman should have this glow, but if the Wood Elves glow, hey, more power to them!). Aragorn will also reportedly give a pre-battle pep-talk in Sindarin. Gandalf isn't sure of where Aragorn would do this. Could be Gondor, could be Lorien, could be a little something special. (Peter, please don't hurt the Elves -- they're all we have left.) · Please pardon our preening as The New Zealand Herald Online quotes Michael's Suite101 column for April 7. · New Line Cinema announces that the internet preview broke the record for most trailer downloads. · Xenite.Org has launched a Middle-earth mailing list. See the Middle-earth mailing list homepage for more details on guidelines and how to subscribe. · New Line Cinema has cast doubt on the selection of Polish composer Wojciech Kilar as the composer for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. According to Scorereviews.com, a New Line executive says that they are favoring James Horner for the job, which was supposed to be wrapped up in Kilar's corner months ago. Thanks to Tolkien-Movies.Com for bringing this to everyone's attention. · Look for Michael's review of the Internet Preview at Suite101's Tolkien and Middle-earth topic. · Concerned about Peter Jackson's portrayal of Aragorn and the hobbits? Well, this so-called Tolkien purist is ecstatic over Viggo Mortensen's description of the characters and their relationships to one another: What initially impressed Viggo about Aragorn was the character's self-sufficiency. "He can survive in nature, live from it, read its signs and live happily, not needing anyone, not relying on anything but his own knowledge and discoveries. There's a humility in that way of life I really admire. But he has to come into his birthright as a prince and take on more responsibility. He's not certain where it will lead him."YES! Peter, you have nailed it! Excerpted from E! Online's April 1, 2000 Lord of the Rings update. · New Line Cinema will be giving fans a sneak preview of the heroes, creatures, and "the TALE that inspired millions" on their official Lord of the Rings movies Web site (see the graphic in the upper right-hand corner of our site) on April 7. · Sir Ian McKellen has done his level best to reassure the concerned fans who have sent him email. Gandalf the Grey should sound somewhat like J.R.R. Tolkien (I approve). He reads each chapter of the book as they film those parts of the story (I APPLAUD HIM!). Why release the movies 1 year apart instead of 6 months as originally indicated? One reason may be that rereleases of the earlier films ala Star Wars strategies of past years will help build up anticipation among the audiences. The extra time will also allow more post-production work on each film, if that becomes necessary. · The Hobbiton set was burned, apparently in preparation for a "Scouring of the Shire" segment.
