Well, most fan sites were reporting Shore as a sure thing when the rumor first broke, so many people have been led to expect an official announcement at some point in time.
One of the names most often mentioned for alternative choices was John Williams, but he recently revealed that while he'll be scoring the soundtrack for "Star Wars, Episode II", his schedule is so tightly packed he isn't sure he would be available for the fourth Indiana Jones movie. So Williams was probably never a serious contender for "Lord of the Rings".
Someone has already thoughtfully (or thoughtlessly) entered Shore for the three LOTR films at the Internet's notorious rumor mill (the IMDB). Visitor-driven databases are of dubious value since their fact-checking leaves much to be desired, but Shore's credits there include many films including "Mrs. Doubtfire", "The Client", "Philedelphia", and "The Silence of the Lambs".
