Gil-galad was an Elven-king... - Lord of the Rings news - J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings

This week's Suite101 Tolkien and Middle-earth article discusses the parentage and history of Gil-galad, and what is canonical or not regarding the character.

With the revelation last week that New Zealand actor Mark Ferguson had played Gil-galad in the Mount Ruapehu filming for Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings", several Tolkien movie news sites posted background information on Gil-galad, some of which was quite incorrect, or outdated.

Christopher Tolkien has confessed to having erred in his portrayal of Gil-galad in The Silmarillion, an error he compounded by altering a text published in Unfinished Tales to conform to his editorial decision for The Silmarillion.
