Why are there so few professional entertainers in Tolkien's stories? Without the benefit of newspapers and printing presses, Middle-earth would depend largely on minstrels and bards to carry its news and preserve its folklore, but most of the singing is handled by amateurs. Did the Elves once serve a function that men couldn't fulfill?
