"Is your canon on the loose" translated into Hebrew

March 04, 2003 at 00:23:22

Tolkien fans who read Hebrew may want to check out the translation of the 'loose canon' article posted to Numenore.com.

Yuval Kfir (Eitheladar), an Israeli fan, has worked diligently to translate Michael Martinez' essay on what constitutes the Tolkien canon into Hebrew for Hebrew readers. The translation is located at http://www.numenore.com/articles/a0014.htm.

One of the obstacles to translating essays like "Is your canon on the loose" is that the puns and double entendres used throughout the essay don't always have parallels in other languages. A joke isn't really funny if it has to be explained in detail.

The title for the essay itself was problematic in this respect, and Yuval decided that "Canon for a thousand voices" would be an appropriate title. The author agreed, as that title does still imply the chaotic nature of defining a Tolkien canon amid the multitude of opinions and viewpoints one encounters in Tolkien fandom.

Many of Michael Martinez' works (including numerous Tolkien-related essays) have, in the past, been translated into Polish, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Greek. May the newest translation be well received.
