Houston area Tolkien and Potter fans dine together throughout September

September 08, 2003 at 02:01:19

Houston fans are meeting up to discuss Tolkien and Rowling, Potter and Frodo in September. Want to learn a little Elvish? Think you're the only adult fan of Harry Potter?

Well, have we got news for you!

This coming Thursday, September 11, Lord of the Rings fans will gather at Bennigan's Grill and Tavern, 10690 Northwest Fwy, Houston, TX at 7:00 PM for an informal dinner party. Costumes are optional (in fact, they are a little out of season, but we'll applaud your creativity).

The monthly LoTR meetups, arranged courtesy of Meetup.com, have been successful in Houston and other cities. Fans come together and forge new friendships with people from many different backgrounds.

But there is another group of dedicated Tolkien fans who will be meeting on Thursday, September 18, to discuss the Quenya Elven language. Meetup.Com's International Elvish Day, another monthly dinner party, is just starting up but there are already several Houstonians who want to learn more about Quenya, one of the fastest growing languages on the Internet (so far as we know).

At this writing, a venue had yet to be selected through member voting. We encourage local fans to sign up and vote on a meeting place. The Barnes and Noble located at 5000 Westheimer (near the Galleria mall) seems to be very popular.

Young Harry Potter fans will be gathering on Tuesday, September 16 at 8:00 PM. Voting is open to Meetup.com members and the Barnes and Noble is among the nominated locations this month.

Next, adult Harry Potter fans will be meeting on Saturday, September 27, at 2:00 PM in a venue yet to be decided upon. Again, voting is open to all members, and the Barnes and Noble near the Galleria is among the nominated locations.

Seems a bit unfair that the kids get to eat and the adults don't, doesn't it?

Finally, for the more serious Tolkien fans, Dr. Jane Chance of Rice University and The Houston Tolkien Society are hosting their monthly dinner at The Hobbit Cafe on Richmond. The informal dinner party is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, September 30.

Xenite.Org founder and Tolkien commentator Michael Martinez plans to attend one or more of these functions. Keep a sharp eye out!
