Clueless SEO contests

The SEO forums generally prove that any idiot can throw up a Web site, collect a few links, and declare himself to be a "professional" SEO (search engine optimizer).

Every now and then, they like to roll up their sleeves and prove conclusively once and for all that all it takes to be a good SEO is to get a lot of links pointing to a particular Web site with a pre-determined keyword expression.

In 2003 it was nigritude ultramarine. In 2006 it v7ndotcom elursrebmem (that is, "v7ndotcom members rule" -- yeah, right).

These contests don't work because they expect people to build their rankings on the basis of linkage. Hm. Also, they ignore the fact that the search engines are looking at the way words and expressions are used across millions of documents.

Now, if some self-appointed hotshot SEO guru wants to generate millions of Web pages for nigritude ultramarine and v7ndotcom elursrebmem I suppose there is no harm done. No one is really searching for these expressions anyway, except SEOs and would-be SEOs who want to see "how it is really done."

In another year or two, SEO contests may become the hot thing. After all, dangle enough money and you'll get lots of people to link to your Web site.

Keep the money. It grows on trees anyway.

When all is said and done at the end of the day, v7ndotcom elursrebmem is not a very effective search expression for proving that linkage rules with search engine optimization. You would do better to work with real estate, california girls, or celebrity nude photos.

True search engine optimization is not about links and it's not about content. It's about looking at what the search engines serve in their results and providing them with a reason to serve something better.

So, yes, the site with the most links for the keywords v7ndotcom elursrebmem or nigritude ultramarine may indeed end up on top of the artificially stimulated search results, but that won't happen because either the contest sponsors or the participants understand what they are doing.

Every day in SEO forums across the world, people start out new forum discussions by saying, "My PR X site has Y links to it but our rankings suck."

Ultimately, someone will followup with the equivalent of, "Hey, it's all about links. Your PR indicates how many links you have and you just need more links. More links means more PR."

And if they should be asked to prove that is the case, they point to contests for search expressions like v7ndotcom elursrebmem and nigritude ultramarine and say, "See? You have to use links to get to the top!"

Never mind the fact that some sites get to the top of popular search expressions with only a handful of links. Never mind the fact that many PR 0 sites top out results above PR 8 and PR 9 sites. Never mind the fact that a few "good quality links" can help far better than tons and tons of cheap links.

But we have nigritude ultramarine and v7ndotcom elursrebmem to thank for convincing people that it's all about links. Using these contests to evaluate the factors that search engines use to rank sites for search results is equivalent to using a pencil eraser to sand the paint off a rusty old car. That is, when you use the wrong tool for the job, you'll still get some people who do a better job than others. After all, everyone is hobbled in the same way.

Ignorance and stupidity go hand in hand in the SEO world. They are accompanied by arrogance and self-serving ineptitude. People get lucky in building communities because there are always people out there who are more ignorant than the self-promoting gurus.

The bottom line is that it doesn't matter who wins for nigritude ultramarine or who wins for v7ndotcom elursrebmem because they don't win in the day-to-day struggles that thousands of Webmasters cope with. I could easily generate a bajillion Web documents that link to this site or some other site with the words "v7ndotcom elursrebmem" or "nigritude ultramarine", and so could many other people.

So what? Anyone can build links.

Search engine optimization is a different puppy altogether. That takes more than a talent for building web pages. It takes a little depth in knowledge and comprehension. Don't look for it in any SEO contests.
