Hot magic nights: Houston's west side salsa scene!
Continued from previous page Yelba

Going Home

Yelba first rose to prominance on Nicaraguan television when she and her sister, Thelma, performed on a weekly series for young artists. She hopes to return to Nicaragua in the future.
Michael: If you were to introduce an entirely new audience to the Houston Latin music scene, which three performers (besides yourself) would you recommend?

Yelba: Jeremy Garcia for his Nuevo Flamenco style on the guitar.

Orquesta Salmerum because to me they are the best in their league and Norma Zenteno beacuse she is a legend in Houston.

Michael: Which three venues would you suggest?

Yelba: Sky Bar and/or Sambuca as a more upscale place, a smaller venue like Mi Luna, and Elvia's if they want to get down and really dance salsa.

Michael: You have collaborated with many artists through the years. Who else would you like to perform with, if you were to have the opportunity?

Yelba: Mainly with the Mejia Godoy family from Nicaragua. I grew up listening to their music as a child and they deeply influenced me from an early age. This may hopefully happen in the near future.

Of course also a legend like Oscar DeLeon or Luis Miguel. A voice like Angela Carrasco or Gloria Estefan. An older group like Trio Los Panchos with their guitars and harmonies! This may never happen, but it's good to dream!

Michael: If you had to give up performing today, what would you do?

Yelba: I am most alive when I sing. I feel blessed and lucky to be a part of this great Houston music scene. If I couldn't perform any more a little part of me would wither. I would concentrate on my husband and kids - maybe one of the kids would want to perform and then.... you never know!

Michael: Is there anything you have not yet done, which you are resolved to do in the future?

Yelba: I am trying to finish my second CD -- in English this time. I want to tour foreign countries for the American troops, and I would like to perform in Nicaragua in the next few years.
