Kevin Sorbo launched a fantasy television revolution when he starred in the first of five television movies based on the Greek hero Hercules.
Michael Hurst joined Sorbo as Hercules' best friend, Iolaus, and together they wove a path across New Zealand and world wide syndication that has yet to be matched by any television show. The Hercules franchise resulted in spinoffs and near-spinoffs including Xena: Warrior Princess, Young Hercules, Amazon Nation/Amazon High, and a rumored (but probably not realistic) Autolycus: King of Thieves.
The original premise for the Hercules franchise was to combine Greek mythology with Hong Kong-style martial arts films. Hercules and his companions spent seven years tossing trees, boulders, and enemy combatants as well as leaping, flipping, and gyrating in humanly impossible melees.
