Lucy Lawless joined the Renaissance Pictures fantasy television franchise when she appeared in the first Hercules movie, "Hercules and the Amazon Women". She also appeared in the first season of the series
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys as a girl named Lyla who fell in love with a centaur.
But Lucy made her mark as the evil warrior princess Xena, who seduced Iolaus and drew him away from Hercules in an attempt to increase her fame and power. Viewers became so enchanted with Xena the producers felt compelled to reform her and give the character her own show.
In
Xena: Warrior Princess, Lucy Lawless was teamed up with Renee O'Connor, who played the endlessly inquisitive Gabrielle. Together, they fought warlords, gods, and monsters as Xena followed her path toward redemption. But Gabrielle had her own story, which unfolded gradually as viewers came to understand the dynamic between the two characters better.
