Every culture seeks to explain how the universe began and how it works. Mythologies are built across many generations and they are not simply concerned with gods of the sky, sea, and land. A complex mythology may have nothing to do with gods and goddesses.
Mythology is a constant source of inspiration to science fiction and fantasy. Heroes and villains have been drawn from numerous mythological sources to create characters in comic books, television shows, and movies. The very popular Hercules: The Legendary Journeys was based on the Greek myths about Heracles, son of Zeus, god of the sky.
The stories we associate with ancient mythologies were considered to be true history by the cultures that maintained them. There may have been very ancient real events and peoples which spawned tales that each generation embellished in its own way. The universal truth behind all myth is that someone has asked a simple question: why is this so? And someone has tried to answer the question.
