Peter Jackson proved that it is indeed possible to retell the story of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings in cinematic form. More than one attempt had been made and until Jackson came along no one had been successful.
Tolkien purists may indeed grumble about lost chapters, missing characters, and rewritten scenes, but the journey of the Ringbearer is still there. The conflict between Sauron and the Free Peoples of Middle-earth remains central to the drama.
