When Darth Vader first strode onto the silver screen in 1977, movie audiences had no way of knowing that he was about to launch a revolution in film and television science fiction and fantasy production. Suddenly, the long-forgotten pulp action stories of the 1930s and 1940s were again popular and in demand.
Beginning as a single movie, "Star Wars", the franchise quickly evolved into a 3-film epic with a twist. The first movie was rechristened in 1978 as "Star Wars - Chapter 4: A New Hope". Audiences wondered what that portended. In 1980 "Star Wars - Chapter 5: The Empire Strikes Back" assured everyone there was no mistake. And 1983's "Star Wars - Chapter 6: The Return of the Jedi" only made audiences want to know more about the Star Wars universe.
Sixteen years later George Lucas finally decided he could finish telling the story. Film and computer technology were beginning to catch up to his hyperactive imagination. In rapid succession Lucasfilm Ltd. produced "Star Wars - Chapter 1: The Phantom Menace", "Star Wars - Chapter 2: Attack of the Clones", and "Star Wars - Chapter 2: The Revenge of the Sith".
The story arc was complete, but for years rumors have persisted that George Lucas originally wanted to tell a 9-movie story. Despite many assurances to the contrary from the producer himself, Lucas fans continue to wait and hope....
