In 1978 ABC Television launched an interesting new television show called
Battlestar Galactica. Inspired by the success of George Lucas' "Star Wars", ABC was hoping to make science fiction adventure a breakthrough primetime television concept.
However, the $1 million-per-episode price tag was excessive for the time. The show maintained good ratings but the ABC Television network mistakenly believed it could make more money by filming low-cost situation comedies. Only after cancelling the show did they realize their mistake.
For many years fans of the original Battlestar Galactica have lobbied to see the show return to the airwaves. In 2003 Ron Moore was given the greenlight to create a mini-series based on an updated concept. The resulting audience reaction was sufficient to warrant creating a new television show by SciFi.
Although some hard feelings remain among fans of the original BSG series, the new show has proven to be a radical step forward in science fiction teledrama. Its cast has also spawned intense fan interest. The Battlestar Galactica Forum is currently one of our most popular forums. Drop by and tell us what you think will happen next.
