In 1994 Centropolis Pictures (owned by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich) released the "Stargate" movie starring James Spader as Dr. Daniel Jackson, Kurt Russell as Colonel O'Neal, and Mili Avital as Sha'Uri. Audiences loved the movie so much that MGM developed a television show around the concept for the Showtime cable network.
Devlin and Emmerich would have made at least two more movies themselves, but that never worked out. Still, by 1997 the new show was under production and MGM quickly extended the contract from two to four years.
Stargate SG-1 lasted for ten seasons, moving from Showtime to SciFi before the SciFi Network finally pulled the plug.
But the franchise is far from finished. A second television series,
Stargate: Atlantis continues in production and 2-3 Direct-to-DvD movies for the SG-1 segment are planned. In 2008, SciFi will launch a third television show,
Stargate: Universe.
