Hercules and Xena Topic at Suite101
In the summer of 1998 I discovered Suite101.Com, possibly through a search engine. Suite101 is a topic-oriented directory, something like About.Com, although with much less hype. Each topic editor writes articles on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis, maintains a (hopefully) up-to-date list of quality links, and may even schedule special events or promotions (such as chats, polls, and contests). I contacted one of the topic editors, told her about Xenite.Org, and requested a link to Xenite.Org. She took a look at Xenite.Org and wrote back suggesting I might want to create a Hercules and Xena topic. Well, I was intrigued by the prospect of getting some additional exposure for myself and Herc and Xena fandom. And the idea of getting paid to write about Hercules and Xena seemed enticing as well (although I've gotten more money writing Hercules and Xena stories under contract to a merchandising company, but that's another story). So, the pay isn't all that much. It covers the costs of your Internet access, maybe a little more, and that's about it. Still, it seemed like fun. So, I created the Hercules and Xena topic. And for a year I put up a new article every two weeks. Sometimes it seemed like a chore. I've always hated deadlines but I usually meet them. The real problem was finding something interesting to say every couple of weeks. But eventually my involvement with Hercules and Xena fandom declined. And while I was running the Hercules and Xena track at DragonCon for the second year in a row in July 1999, I decided I needed a break. So I decided to become more active in Tolkien fandom. I didn't want to leave Suite101 with a dead topic, however, so looked around and found a replacement for myself. I'm happy to say that Josh Harrison has been a great Hercules and Xena Topic editor and he is putting up some thoughtful articles. But when I started working on the J.R.R. Tolkien and Middle-earth Topic, Suite101 sort of archived my Hercules and Xena articles. I'm not sure of how, but some people are still finding them, and they are read by a few people each day. But I didn't want them to be lost forever (even if some of the links they contain are no longer valid). So, since I retain the copyright to them, I get to do whatever I want with them. And I've decided to put them up here at Xenite.Org. Some of these articles (maybe all of them) are a little dated now. That's what comes of writing about current events. But these articles will, I hope, provide some insight into the workings of Hercules and Xena online fandom during its heyday. Many folks have since become disillusioned with Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys is no longer in production. Maybe in another year or two Josh will be resurrecting his Suite101 articles on another site. All good things must come to an end. In this latest version of the articles archive, as many old, dead links as I could find have been removed. Some links have been updated. There may still be some old links I missed. So, without further delay, I present to you my ancient Hercules and Xena articles. I hope you enjoy them.... |
