Five Hercules and Xena Web Sites I'd Like To See

I've talked enough about how to design Web sites, I suppose. Now it's time to discuss some ideas for Web sites I'd still like to see. Maybe sites like these already exist. I haven't been able to find (let alone look at) all the Hercules and Xena sites out there. But these are pretty ambitious projects I think people would appreciate if they knew where to find them. Anyone who would like to use these ideas is more than welcome to them. I just hope you don't run out of time, energy, and enthusiasm.:)

The Hercules and Xena Repertory Company

It's easy enough to find bios and pictures of Kevin Sorbo (Hercules), Michael Hurst (Iolaus), Lucy Lawless (Xena), and Renee O'Connor (Gabrielle). And there are plenty of Web sites for Bruce Campbell (Autolycus) and Hudson Leick (Callisto). Many of the other actors who have appeared on these shows have their own Web sites or sites devoted to them. But what I have never found is a comprehensive listing of all the regular and semi-regular actors on the shows.

There is a pretty good example of what I have in mind at Aeolus's Xena:WP Cast & Characters Page. But this page only scratches the surface. I think people would be interested in reading about all the actors who have helped to make Hercules and Xena not just great shows, but great shows produced in tandem (and, yes, YOUNG HERCULES actors should be included, too).

You get extra points if you provide links showing the connections between the various actors outside of Hercules and Xena (for example: Michael Hurst and Lisa Chappell have worked together elsewhere).

The Adventures of Autolycus: His Life, Loves, and Laughs

As popular as Bruce Campbell and this character are, I have yet to find a Web site for Autolycus fan fiction. I realize that a great part of the fan fiction on the Web is sexually or romantically inclined, but even Autolycus has had a love interest: Cupcake. Sure, she married a prince, but who cares? Kill him off. Or bring in the Cupcake from the alternate universe. Have Autolycus go to the alternate universe and win the heart of that wacky, evil Xena. I mean, there is a lot which could be done with this character.

There are worlds to steal, hearts to break, and adventures to be had. The King of Thieves is a great character with a lot of potential. You'd never be able to sell any of these stories, but I suspect some very good writing lessons could be learned by working up a string of adventures for the guy. Let me know if someone takes the plunge.

Centaur Legends

There was once a Web site devoted to Centaurs, but, alas, it is gone. I can find it in the search engines but the link has expired. It would be neat if someone were to collect all the information about Centaurs that has been made available through the shows. Some of the Centaurs have appeared in more than one episode (such as Derik, Hercules' friend, and Kaleipus, and of course Chiron in YOUNG HERCULES). These characters have lives and histories, and some of the details have been shared with us.

But I wouldn't stop there. The actors should also be profiled. People might like to know where else they may have seen them (or where to look for them). And maybe some pointers on how to create a Centaur would be helpful. Did you know the actors actually wear prosthetics? And, what the heck, why not include the Golden Hind as well?

Hercules and Xena: The Musical

At Xenite.Org we receive 2-3 inquiries a week sometimes about how to join the writing staff for HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS or XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS. Well, the truth of the matter is that if you don't already have an agent submitting scripts for you, it's probably too late to get into the fold. If you're serious about writing for television, don't give up. Get out there, find some shows just starting up production, and send them some spec scripts (scripts written for other shows that show you can write) if they'll accept them. You may find the door to your career yet.

However, if you just want to write Hercules and Xena stories, and don't want to write fan fiction, there is another outlet for you. There is no money in it, of course, as it's still "fan fiction". You see, you can write scripts for parodies which can be performed at conventions and such. I've actually seen a performance by The Mighty Rassilon Art Players at the 1998 DragonCon. They staged "Buffy: Warrior Princess". If they can do it, so can other people.

So, get out your quill and ink bottle and write that one great Hercules opera, that Xena musical, that Salmoneus In Paris play you've been itching to share with other fans. Just keep in mind that certain legalities have to be observed. You'll need to do a little research on what constitutes fair use and parody, but it could give fandom a nice alternative to trivia contests.

The Herc/Xena Daily News

There are Web sites which post daily news items about STAR WARS, STAR TREK, and other popular SF media franchises. It seems to me someone with a lot of time, friends, and gumption could start up the Hercules/Xena gossip sheet our corner of fandom so desperately demands. With three television series and all the actors, writers, and directors (not to mention the Horde of procuders) that are involved, I should think there is enough going on that a daily gossip site could be done. Maybe, maybe not.

Of course, there are other ideas I haven't thought of. Maybe you'll think of some of them. Let me know when you get that new Web site up and running.
