Hercules Fans Provide A Lot of Fiction and Art
As of February 2007, many of the Web sites mentioned in this article no longer exist. Check Xena Online Resources for sites that are still around.
At the 1998 DragonCon Hercules/Xena Track we had several panels on fanfiction. One of the most hilarious moments of the track came when Keith DeCaondido reviewed some of the Hercules Slash Fiction he'd either heard of or encountered while browsing the Web. Slash Fiction is so named because it concerns non-heterosexual relationships or multiple partner relationships. Even the hard-core Xena fans were rolling in the aisles as Keith described some of the extremes that Hercules Slash authors have explored.

Well, Slash Fiction is only a small part of the creative expression of the Hercules fans. I've found a lot of sites out there with stories and artwork and I thought I'd share some of them with you.

Anyone just starting out on the hunt for Fan Fiction should be sure to visit HERCULES ULTIMATE GUIDE and XENA ONLINE RESOURCES. We point to a lot of fanfic sites. And THE ATHENAEUM is the largest collection of Hercules and Xena fan fiction on the Web. But there are other great sources, as well as some interesting sites which are going it alone. I can by no means provide and exhaustive list of resources here, but this is a start.

One of the neat things about fan fiction authors is that you can find some of them posting stories to many sites. They like to share their creativity and fan fiction is an area where selfishness just doesn't crop up very often -- at least, not in my experience. Fanfic writers also don't observe too many boundaries. Hence, you'll find that Keith DeCandido and his wife Marina Frants explore Iolaus' leanings toward Immortality (ala HIGHLANDER crossover stories).

Crossover fiction is not uncommon, and one of the neatest sites I've found is Ceallach's HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY FAIRY TALES. Rather than have Herc take on STAR TREK, X-FILES, FRIENDS, and FRASIER, the authors who have contributed these tales take the Big Guy back to the classics -- well, back to folklore. :)

The SFF.NET domain has an extensive collection of Fan Fiction links called FAN FICTION ON THE NET (service has been shut down), and their section on HERCULES contains the following entries:

  • Barb and Marti's Page
  • Ceallach's Iolausian Page: The Writer's Corner
  • Chalciope's Corner
  • Chaos Central: Hercules: The Legendary Journeys Fan Fiction
  • Fan Fiction for and by Hurst Fans
  • Gharedsu's Fanfic Home Page
  • Interactive Herc-Xena Fan Fiction
  • Lessa's Smithsonian Page
  • Mindy's Hercules: The Legendary Journeys Page
  • The Sacred Sorbo Scrolls
  • Susabelle's Hercules Fan Fiction Page
  • WhiteCat's Creative Writing Collection
Now, I don't want to steal anyone's thunder, but this list contains some high-quality links. In particular, CEALLACH'S WRITER'S CORNER, LESSA'S SMITHSONIAN PAGE, and SUSABELLE'S HERCULES FAN FICTION PAGE all carry a lot of stories and links.

You can also look at THE HERCULES FAN FICTION WEBRING HOMEPAGE, created by Ceallach, and browse a collection of Web sites that contain fan fiction.

CERYNDIP'S SANCTUARY is another major source of fan fiction. You'll keep finding new stories here just by using a search engine to look for "Hercules fan fiction".

FIREHEART'S SCROLL INDEX is another great collection of stories and links.

HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS is an example of a site that hasn't yet linked up with the large indexes or the Webring. There are others waiting to be discovered.

Hera's Gift is an example of some of that slash fiction I mentioned. The content may be offensive to some readers.

Fan artwork is also interesting to explore, and there are some great sites out there: SUSABELLE'S HERCULES AND XENA ARTWORK and ELECTRA'S HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS FAN ARTWORK SHRINE will get you started.

If you are interested in publishing your own fan fiction on the Web but don't have the time or knowledge to create Web sites, the index owners are usually looking for new fiction and artwork to include or link to on their sites. There is an ever-hungry audience for fan fiction that is constantly looking for more. So have fun browsing these sites, and good luck working on your own fannish projects.
