Join the Sorbo Homecoming Celebration

Fans are starting to accept the reality that HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS will soon be showing its last first-run episode. Filming has already ended and the Herc cast and crew are going their separate ways after seveeral years' hard and innovative work. Whatever else happens for them, I think they'll always be able to look back on the show with pride. H:TLJ launched a new era in SF television and helped to spark a revolution in fandom.

We've known for many years that Kevin wanted to return to the United States, and now he's coming home. Online fans are banding together to purchase A Star To Guide Them home. Donations have already exceeded the cost of purchasing the star and the excess funds are being donated to A World Fit For Kids in the name of the Sorbos from Sorbo fans on the Net.

This is not the first time fans have banded together to purchase a special gift for beloved stars. Members of the Chakram mailing list bought Stars for Lucy and Renee a couple of years ago. The star names are not recognized by the scientific catalogues, but the Internet ensures that many, many people know about these gifts by bringing them in touch with the commemorative Web sites announcing them. The star names are valid for us and that's what's important to the fans. The Sorbos will receive a plaque and certificate giving the coordinates for their star.

To be honest, a couple of years ago members of the Hercules mailing list looked into getting a different kind of gift for Kevin. It seemed like a good idea to name a mountain for Kevin. The US Geographical Survey service apparently allows people who discover unnamed mountains (there are still a few left in the United States) to nominate names for them. Fans fantasized about Sorbo Peak, Kevin Falls, Hercules Mountain with enthusiasm. Alas, it seems the names are bestowed only posthumously. No one wanted to rush things so the matter was allowed to drop.

But the desire to do and say something special for the star of H:TLJ has always been there, always been strong. Fans used to flock to the MCA Web sites to sign online birthday cards for Kevin and Michael (Hurst). The Homecoming for the Sorbos is just another way of saying, "Thank you for a great effort. We really enjoy watching the show."

The celebration is picking up steam as it rolls into the critical month of July. Webmasters are being asked to link to the Homecoming page with a special banner, fans are being asked to sign the guestbook with a special welcome message for the Sorbos, and those who can express their appreciation with financial donations are invited to help raise money for a beloved charity.

But wait, that's not all! Do you have children who are out there cruising the Web even now? They, too, can participate in the Homecoming celebration. Just take a look at Kudos from Kids. The Homecoming organizers are soliciting online letters from younger fans who want to say something special to Kevin and Sam as well.

The list of messages includes contributions from Australia entitled "Hands for Kevin and Sam". Young fans describe what they do (or would do) with their hands for Kevin and Sam. The page is a warm and innovative expression of fannish love that reaches out to the younger folks and recognizes the kid in all of us. We never quite fully grow up.

Welcome home, Kevin, Sam, and Gizmoe. We're looking forward to many more happy years in the playground with you.
