Using online bookstores to promote your books
Amazon.com is the most visible online bookstore. They set the standard that all other online book stores are judged by. They have engaged in abusive and misleading practices which I, personally, disapprove of. For example, they will list "used" books for sale which are actually only Print-On-Demand books. My first book was listed as "Available Used" when it was first published. So was my third book. How could Amazon have had used copies before anyone had had a chance to buy the book? Xenite.Org has only reluctantly, after two years of abstaining from doing business with Amazon, returned to the Amazon Associates program, but we are not seeing as much interest in Amazon sales as we used to. That said, if you're going to play the Amazon game, then get over there and write reviews about other peoples' books, create lists, and make sure you keep an up-to-date About You area so that people can learn more about who you are and what you do. What you'll find at other stores Barnes and Noble offers sales ranking and reader reviews. However, the reader reviews are not associated with profiles (as of April 2001). Booksamillion does not offer any of the above services. However, their Millionaire Club does provide better discounts than the other online stores show. Yahoo! Books offers reviews and you may create a member profile with extensive information about yourself. The member profile is made available in any reviews you write, any clubs you join, and in the member directory (if you allow them to list it). It is also used in all other Yahoo! services I have tried out (like their forums). Yahoo! Books does not offer sponsored listings, anything like Listmania, or sales ranking. Vstore allows you to create your own virtual store which you can promote. The service has become more sophisticated over the past couple of years, and they now support multiple product divisions, customer reviews, and more. They also offer many discounts, although you cannot set prices, even for your own books. Check out the Xenite.Org Books Web site. You can look at their listing for Visualizing Middle-earth. Unfortunately, they don't carry every book that has been published, so be sure they list your book (at the very least, it MUST have an ISBN) before you assume it is listed in their catalogue. Buy.Com does not offer sales ranking, reader reviews, anything like Listmania, sponsored links, or profiles. They do have good discounts. Where else are our books sold? W. H. Smith accepts reader reviews and author comments. They also have a "Letters to the Editor" section. |
