Introduction
J.R.R. Tolkien has delighted millions of readers with fantasy stories about hobbits, elves, dwarves, and middle-earth. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien's books about Middle-earth include The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, The Road Goes Ever On, and the posthumously published The Silmarillion. His son, Christopher Tolkien, has also provided us with Unfinished Tales and the twelve volumes of The History of Middle-earth, which explore J.R.R. Tolkien's creative record in great detail. This page is a gateway to the Tolkien resources available at Xenite.Org.

Do Balrogs Have Wings? Do Balrogs Fly?
This is the only site on the Internet that attempts to give you the straight, unbiased explanation of Balrogs and their wings. It doesn't matter whether you think Balrogs have wings or not. What did Tolkien think? Did he really intend for the reader to picture an amorphous, maybe-winged/maybe-not-winged creature when he published his story? And why do so many people misunderstand the use of simile and metaphor? English class was never this adventurous! Hey. Believe what you will, but don't cheat other people by holding back or disguising the facts. Let them know there is a real answer to the Balrog Wings question (and then run for the hills as they steam and thunder in fury!).
