The software was written as part of a migration away from the free Perl scripts we've been employing since Xenite.Org was first launched in March 1997. Now as we update existing or add new Web sites we'll be able to post immediate announcements to our news page. The tool has already been implemented on our Lord of the Rings movie news page.
The next step in the evolution of CGI applications on Xenite.Org should be a new, multipurpose message board system unlike any system currently in use on the Web. Although many services provide their own CGI applications, we have not found any which really meet our needs. So we feel the design will differ greatly from that of other services, and hopefully our communities will be pleased with the change.
Additional enhancements on Xenite.Org will include essay upload areas that visitors can use to create their own Xenite.Org content as a way of being part of the Xenite.Org community. Our intention is not to provide free Web space, but rather to encourage people to broaden their discussions of science fiction, fantasy, and related topics with thoughtful commentaries, new FAQ files, and other resources.
All of these features will be built around the core application which makes its first appearance in the news headlines tool. Xenite.Org may release the code for its custom applications as a free distribution at some point in the future.
