COPPA, as the law is usually called, requires that Web site owners and operators, and Web service providers, implement some form of parental consent mechanism if they interact with children. When news of the law, which became active on April 21, 2000, caught the Webmastering community at Jimworld.Com by surprise, Michael volunteered to research the law and write an article about it.
The research and article have brought Michael to the attention of the media, and on June 22 The Hutchinson News, a daily Kansas newpaper which publishes its content on the Web as well as in print, published an interview with Michael.
Michael's first article about COPPA was published in the April 2000 edition of Whoosh!, an online magazine which serves the fan community devoted to television shows produced by Renaissance Pictures, such as Xena: Warrior Princess and Jack of All Trades.
The article was then picked up by Virtual Promote for their Webmaster newsletter, The Gazette, which boasts a circulation of over 200,000. Michael revised and expanded the article for the Gazette, and it has since been incorporated into Virtual Promote's Privacy World Web site.
The interview in the Hutchinson Daily News covers events from Michael's online experiences which concerned the privacy of children and how the new law would impact similar events if they were to occur.
