Inklings Roundtable of Houston crowds the Black Labrador restaurant

November 11, 2005 at 04:03:55

The Inklings Roundtable of Houston had their monthly meeting November 10 at the Black Labrador, an English pub on Montrose near the intersection with Richmond Avenue.

More than 20 people attended the dinner party, which unfortunately had to be held in the main dining area beside the bar because the private dining room usually reserved for the group was having air conditioning problems.

Nonetheless, the restaurant's staff did a great job of keeping the food and drink coming despite the ambitious spelunking requirements afforded by the seating arrangements.

More than 20 fans of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis attended the dinner, and a fan representative of the Disney Company brought a table full of giveaways and door prizes to help promote the upcoming "Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" movie.

Apparently, the marketing people cannot decide who should recieve their attention. They have flip-flopped back and forth between courting the Christian community (who turned out in large numbers to support Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" in 2004 but who are unlikely to be as supportive of Narnia) and the traditional Disney audience of families and young viewers.

Traditional science fiction and fantasy fans seem to have been overlooked, except for special functions like this one. At least Disney knows there is an interest in the science fiction and fantasy fandom community.

We've updated the Inklings Roundtable of Houston page on Xenite with thumbnails of pictures from several meetings in 2005. If we get pictures from the November dinner we'll add them to the page.

The Houston Costuming group that was scheduled to make a presentation did indeed attend the dinner, but the restaurant was so crowded they deferred the presentation until a later date. Nonetheless, several dinner attendees showed up in costume, much to the surprise and interest of other restaurant patrons and staff.
