Fans of J.R.R. Tolkien and Peter Jackson gathered for the December 18 opening of Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" movie at the AMC Gulfe Pointe 30 theater in Houston, Texas. Event organizer Vince Smith, known as Thenamir of The BarrowDowns, a popular Tolkien fan site, used the Line Party Database at TheOneRing.Net to announce the event. Xenite.Org founder Michael Martinez, who currently resides in the Houston area, helped to promote the event and made a personal appearance, as well as contributing two copies of his book, Visualizing Middle-earth, for door prizes.
But don't get the wrong impression. This event was the brain-child of Thenamir, who did a fantastic job of bringing together approximately 2800 fans to celebrate the opening of the second movie in Peter Jackson's trilogy, which is based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The Houston Chronicle reported that three local AMC theaters had scheduled midnight showings of the movie. The AMC Gulf Pointe 30 theater had served as the venue for the 2001 Line Party and was therefore selected for the 2002 Line Party as well. Plans for the 2003 Line Party include the AMC Gulf Pointe 30 theater again. At least two local television stations, KHOU Channel 11 and KHWB Channel 39 sent crews to cover the event for their 10PM and 9PM news broadcasts (respectively). Although more than 1800 tickets had been sold in advance of the film opening, only a hundred or so fans were at the theater by 9PM. But at least a couple dozen people in costume had already shown up, and many of them were interviewed or taped for the news broadcasts. The Channel 39 crew actually interviewed several people outside the nearby Bennigan's restaurant around 7PM. We've put together a full report of the evening's festivities, along with some exclusive pictures taken by Michael. We hope you enjoy the report.
