Smallville
Superboy -- NOT!
Everyone seems to say the same thing about Superman and Superboy: he's boring as a superhero because he can do anything. Ever since Christopher Reeve said he enjoyed playing Clark Kent more than he enjoyed playing Superman, the trend in major media seems to have emphasized Clark's character. First we got Lois and Clark and then we got Smallville.
A television show is only popular if it strikes a chord with its audience. The emphasis on Clark's human conflicts undoubtedly helped bring this show home to the viewers. We find it hard to relate to anyone who can outrun trains, but we can empathize with an adolescent's struggle to grow up and cope with the limitations the world imposes on him.
This unfolding drama of Clark Kent has gradually introduced many of the classic characters from the Superman saga, each entering the scene with a sense of familiarity but a unique perspective. That perspective is shaped, in part, by the knowledge that we are each very much like Clark, Lana, Lex, Lois, and all the others. That is because they are like us: human, despite whatever else they may prove to be in the long run.
