Andre Norton Books

The cover for Andre Norton: A Primary and Secondary Bibliography, edited by Robert C. Schlobin and Irene R. Harrison.
Mention Andre Norton's name around any group of science fiction and fantasy writers, and almost all of them will admit to having read one or more of her stories. Andre (born Mary Alice Norton) began quietly breaking down barriers to women writers in science fiction and fantasy in the 1930s and she never stopped. Changing her name to the sexually ambiguous "Andre", she allowed more than one hard-nosed traditionalist to believe she was a he until it was too late to close the doors of literary success.

Andre's long career has been studied and analyzed in depth by scholars and students alike. The bibliographical work of Robert Schlobn and Irene Harrison (who is a moderator on our Andre Norton Forum) is thorough and extensive. The compleat Andre Norton researcher will follow their roadmap through her career with humility and gratitude. Unlike some writers, Andre Norton did not simply churn out a few dozen books. She is one of the most prolific writers in the history of science fiction and fantasy, if not (indeed) in literary history.

A few years ago, Irene graciously shared some of her research with us here at Xenite.Org. We presented our visitors with An Andre Norton Collector's Starting List. While it has not exactly been our most popular site, it continues to draw interest from readers around the world.

Andre's work has been translated into many languages, and her students of literature and imagination are legion. The Witch World books represent only a small fraction of her corpus.
The book references which follow are mostly MY books. These aren't necessarily the best copies or editions that you will be able to find. I'm just listing here what my sources of information are. Also, though I have indeed read all these books (with two exceptions), my notes don't cover all of them.

Special thanks to Lady_Witch and Richard Frahm for letting me know about WERE-WRATH, a book I don't expect to ever see.
