Woman of the Old Race, originally from Estcarp. Seized as a child by the Hounds of Alizon from Estcarp, Gillan was taken for an undiclosed reason to the main port in High Hallack where the Hounds of Alizon brought in supplies. Furlo of Thantop found her while raiding the Alizonders and he sent Gillan under guard to his wife, Freeza. When Thantop was overrun, Freeza and Gillan fled to Norstead Abbey in the upper dales. After Freeza died Gillan stayed in the care of the Dames but eventually substituted herself for one of the Thirteen Brides given to the Were Riders. She chose Herrel and followed him to Arvon, where they fought his companions for her freedom and life. Gillan and Herrel eventually settled in Reeth, a star-shaped tower standing amid a forest in Arvon near the Redmantle clan-lands. Gillan bore Herrel a son, Kerovan, who was taken from her at birth. Aylinn, a daughter born to Herrel's half-sister, was left in Kerovan's place and Gillan and Herrel raised her as their own. (YEAR OF THE UNICORN, THE JARGOON PARD).

  7. Gorm
Island in the great bay facing Estcarp. Men settled there some centuries after the Old Race established Estcarp. They were seaman, fishermen, and merchants. Sippar was the capitol and largest city of Gorm, where the Lord Defender lived and ruled the nation. When Hilder, last Lord Defender of Gorm died, his widow Orna brought in the Kolder to help her seize power, but they instead enslaved all the inhabitants and used them as zombie-like servants and soldiers in the war against Estcarp. (WITCH WORLD).

  8. Gralya
Daleswoman of High Hallack. Married to Lord Jerret. She was the sister of Kildas, one of the Were Rider brides, and arranged to have Kildas included in the bargan to keep Jerret from dallying with her. (YEAR OF THE UNICORN).

  9. Grathulda
Abbess of the Shrine, apparently an Abbey of the Flame. Grathulda was Ysmay's friend and mentor. (SPELL OF THE WITCH WORLD).

  10. Grayford
Town or Abbey in High Hallack, probably a town in or near Langsdale. Annet tells Gyrerd that the Ladies of Grayford wore amulets of Amber for their health. (SPELL OF THE WITCH WORLD).

  11. Great Star, the
An emblem of power, used in calling upon one of the greatest powers. (THE CRYSTAL GRYPHON).

  12. Gryphon, Leaping
The crest of Ulmsdale. As an emblem the Gryphon was emblazoned on a field of green. (THE CRYSTAL GRYPHON).

  13. Guardian
Chief of the Witches of Estcarp, traditional leader of the Council of Witches, and for many centuries she who held the office of Guardian was the ruler of Estcarp. Being Witches, the Guardians never revealed their true names to the general population and were known only by their title of office. (WITCH WORLD, WEB OF THE WITCH WORLD, other books).

  14. Guards
The soldiers of Estcarp, mostly men of the Old Race. Though based in Es City, they maintained a line of forts along the borders with Alizon and Karsten. A special branch of the Guards was called the Borderers, and these were mostly drawn from exiles of Karsten, used to patrol the borderlands between Estcarp and Karsten. The Guards were courageous warriors, often fighting until the last man against their foes. They took strategic direction from the Witches but were led by a Captain, one of the last of whom was Koris of Gorm. The Guards were mailed and fought with swords, but they also went armed with special dart guns that were quite deadly. They often teamed up with Falconers (who usually scouted for them) or Sulcar when confronting enemies afield. (WITCH WORLD, WEB OF THE WITCH WORLD, THREE AGAINST THE WITCH WORLD, WARLOCK OF THE WITCH WORLD).

  15. Gunnora
Lady of the Old Race, Adept of Arvon. Also called Rashonna, The Harvest Mother, and Gennora of the Harvests. Gunnora nutrured life and was honored by maidens and mothers. Men feared to draw weapons in any place where her power dwelt. Amulets of Gunnora were often used as talismans. Women called on Gunnora to help with hard births. Apparently farmers asked Wise Women to invoke Gunnora when planting crops, and one of her amulats was made from grains. (SPELL OF THE WITCH WORLD, HORN CROWN, THE CRYSTAL GRYPHON, THE KARGOON PARD, ZARSTHOR'S BANE).

  16. Guttorm

Daleslord of High Hallack, lord of Uppsdale after the war with Alizon. He was probably the son of Savron. Gyrerd married Annet of Langsdale and betrothed his sister, Ysmay, to Hylle the Usurper. (SPELL OF THE WITCH WORLD).
