When Hercules and Ares get into a fight, Zeus strikes out with a lightning bolt that opens a gateway to an alternate universe where Ares is the God of Love and Hercules is known as the Sovereign. The Sovereign is evil and Xena is his moll. The two Iolauses change places and gradually the good Hercules and his friend learn that the Sovereign is poisoning Zeus in an effort to take control of the Olympian gods. They thwart his plan and trap him between universes.
In the alternate universe Xena has only the innate talents of her other self, but not the skills and training. She is nonetheless evil and conniving, having procured a source of Hind's blood with which she inveigles her way into the Sovereign's affairs. Moll-Xena revels in the casual executions of innocent people, but she also coyly asks Aphrodite (Queen of the Gods) questions as they march down the wedding aisle where the Sovereign is waiting to be made King of the Gods.
The Iolaus of this alternate world is a cowardly trickster enslaved by the Sovereign without any skills as a warrior. Nonetheless, he has been recruited by the rebels to assassinate the Sovereign. Joxer is the very capable warrior lieutenant of the rebels, and he assumes command of the group when their leader is executed. Most surprising of all, Gabrielle is a maniacal execution who is kept in a box. She spins and whirls around with a large axe and apparently has little intelligence.
