The History of
Xena: Warrior Princess

Genealogies

Note: A genealogy for Joxer's family has been added to the bottom of this page. Following that is a list of secondary characters played by Lucy Lawless in both Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess.

Xena's Family

        Atrius =:= Cyrene                Hermia

               Melinda Pappas

Borias was Xena's lieutenant and lover, according to "Orphan of War", the first episode of the second season. He was the father of Solan, Xena's son.

Lyceus was killed when Cortese attacked Amphipolis. Toris fled into the hills and spent roughly ten years tracking Cortese. He went back to Amphipolis after he and Xena defeated Cortese, but he has not been mentioned again (not even in "Remember Nothing", a second season episode where the Three Fates gave Xena a chance to relive her life and Lyceus was still alive).

Hermia and Flora (from "The Black Wolf") are listed here just in case they should ever turn out to be Xena's cousins or something. Xena and Flora were apparently good friends in Amphipolis.

Eve is Xena's daughter "fathered by no man". Originally intended to be Solan reborn, the child is now Callisto reborn and destined to help bring on the "Twilight of the Gods" (not the Norse Ragnarrok, but rather the decline of faith in all pantheons around the world). Eve has also become Eli's messenger on Earth, a sort of apostle-in-training, or prophetess.

The Royal House of the Amazons

                       [an unnamed queen]               Tyldus

              Velasca             Gabrielle                |
                                  :  |   : [rt of caste]   |
                                  :  | Ephiny  =:= Phantes [centaur]
                                  :  |dau.      |
                                  : Hope      Xenan
                                  :
                             Janis Covington

Terreis was Melosa's biological sister. When she was mortally wounded in "Hooves and Harlots", she lay exposed to further harm and Gabrielle threw herself over Terreis' body. Terreis then gave Gabrielle her Right of Caste. Ephiny and other Amazons witnessed the declaration. Melosa accepted Gabrielle as her new sister and inducted her into the tribe.

Velasca was adopted by Melosa when her own mother was killed in the first war with the centaurs, and Melosa raised Velasca as her own daughter.

When Melosa gave Terreis the Right of Caste, Velasca challenged her but lost the combat and was either banished or left the tribe.

In "Hooves and Harlots" Gabrielle challenged Melosa for the right to rule. Xena, as Gabrielle's champion, defeated Melosa, making Gabrielle rightful Queen.

However, Gabrielle renounced the challenge after peace was made with Tyldus (by freeing his son Phantes and revealing that Krycus was behind all the misdeeds). Melosa therefore resumed her rule over the Amazons but Xena led the Amazons as the champion of the victor in the duel.

In "Is There A Doctor In the House" Gabrielle, when she thought she was dying, gave her Right of Caste to Ephiny. Ephiny therefore became an Amazon princess, or close enough.

After Velasca returned to Melosa's tribe, she challenged the Queen again and won, killing Melosa. The outcome was apparently challenged and a tribunal was convened to rule on the decision. Ephiny and other Amazons favored Gabrielle over Velasca because Gabrielle was then the "natural" heir of Melosa and had no ambitions for leading the Amazons into a hopeless war against the centaurs.

Since Ephiny had Gabrielle's Right of Caste (at one point), and since she was the leader of the loyal Amazons, it was just for Gabrielle to name her Queen, although Ephiny accepted the Mask of the Queen as no more than Regent, to rule until Gabrielle's return.

Since Ephiny is in fact older than Gabrielle, the table above does not reflect relative ages well. Ephiny should have been close to Terreis' age, and Terreis appears to have been younger than Melosa by quite a few years.

On February 8, 1997, Steven L. Sears posted a message to the Xenaverse mailing list confirming most of this information. The message was forwarded to the Herkules mailing list. Sears is a producer and writer for the show, and he worked out the rules of Caste and Succession for the Amazons.

Hope, the daughter of Gabrielle, appears to have been fathered by the evil god Dahok (in "The Deliverer").

The information on Janis Covington and the Pappas family comes mostly from the episode "The Xena Scrolls". However, it appears that "Maternal Instincts" indicates a separate line of descent from Xena for the Pappas family than through Solan.
