Ares has actually been played by two actors and one unnamed stunt person. Kevin Smith's portrayal is the best of the three. On Hercules: The Legendary Journeys Kevin plays Herc's melancholy brother Iphicles and in the third season was finally allowed to bring real life to the character of Ares as he had done on Xena:Warrior Princess already. Be careful when searching for Kevin Smith web sites. There is also a director named Kevin Smith who resembles this guy. They are not the same. And there is a producer (an older man) named Kevin Smith as well.
